In 119 BC, Li took position as general of Vanguard when he was over sixty helping Wei Qing to hunt the Xiongnu. Later he was told by his commander Wei Qing to follow the lead of another general called Zhao Yiji. They lost their way in the weather and terrain without a guide. Meanwhile Wei Qing tried an assault on the Xiongnu but had failed. On his way back he met both generals, Li and Zhao. In order to shift responsibility for lost battle, Wei Qing tried to gang up with Li against Zhao, but being an honest man, Li refused and had to face Wei's anger. He was forced to go to tribunal by Wei Qing (who was a traitor). Unable to bear going to tribunal he drew out his sword and cut off his throat. A star in his time died due to injustice.
